Liunian Privacy Policy
Effective date: September 25, 2026
Liunian ("the app") is provided by Liunian's developer ("we", "us"). This policy explains what happens to your information when you use Liunian. The short version: your notes live on your device and in your own iCloud account. We cannot read them. Content leaves your device only when you use an AI feature, and only for as long as it takes to answer.
What stays with you
- Notes, photos, videos, voice recordings, reminders and to-dos are stored on your device. If iCloud is on, Apple syncs them through your private iCloud account. We have no access to your iCloud data.
- Your name and profile photo, if you add them on the Account page, are stored on your device and synced through your private iCloud account. They are never sent to us.
- Your knowledge base (the relationship graph built from your notes) is stored only on your device.
- Speech recognition for recordings runs on your device by default.
- Location: when you allow it, the app records where a note was written (its coordinates, as precise as you allow in the Settings app, and the place name) and saves them with the note, on your device and in your iCloud. The app only reads your location while you are using it. Coordinates are never sent to us; Ask sends place names only.
What is sent when you use an AI feature
AI features run through our server (the "Liunian service"), which forwards the request to an AI model provider. What is sent depends on the feature:
- Ask: your question; the text, transcripts, image descriptions, dates and place names of the notes selected for that question; an overview of your whole library without any note's content (how many notes you have, when and of what kind, and the names of the places they were written at, with how often); and, when you ask a follow-up, up to your last four questions and answers in that conversation. With Plus and the knowledge base turned on, Ask may also send the names of the people, places and other things your notes mention that the question is about, with a few short facts your notes state about them. A spoken question is recognised on your device; its recording is sent only when your device cannot recognise it, and only to turn it into text.
- AI Daily (Plus): for the day you choose, the text, transcripts, image descriptions, times and place names of that day's notes, and the reminders, to-dos and Review Later items you set that day. Photos and recordings themselves are not sent. The summary is stored on your device and in your private iCloud database, not on our servers.
- Web search in Ask: when a question asks about something public, such as a restaurant or a landmark, only a short search phrase (a name and a city) is sent to a web search provider. Your notes and earlier answers are never part of a web search.
- Cloud transcription: if you choose it in Settings, the sound of the recording or video.
- Summaries (Plus): the transcript of the recording or video you chose. For a video, also a few small still frames taken from it on your device. The video file itself is never sent.
- Knowledge base: once you turn it on, the text, date and place name of each note as it is organised.
The first time you use Ask, the app explains this and asks for your permission. Nothing is sent until you agree, and you can stop using AI features at any time.
Who processes it
- Liunian service (hosted on Fly.io in the United States or Japan): receives the request, checks your plan and forwards the request. It does not store your notes, audio or photos.
- OpenRouter: routes the request to an AI model provider, such as OpenAI or DeepSeek, and routes web searches to a search provider, such as Exa. These companies process the data to produce the result, under their own terms and privacy policies.
We do not sell your information, share it for advertising or use it to track you. We do not use your content to train AI models.
What the Liunian service keeps
- AI results for up to 24 hours, so that a request retried after a network failure is answered without being charged twice. They are then deleted.
- Monthly usage counters (for example, how many questions you asked this month), stored under an identifier derived from your App Store purchase record. We keep them as long as needed to run your plan's allowance, to prevent abuse and to meet legal obligations.
- Request logs containing the time, feature, result code, cost and a hashed identifier. The logs never contain your questions, notes, audio, images, summaries or answers.
Purchases
Subscriptions are sold and billed by Apple. We never see your payment details. The app sends Apple's signed record of your purchase to the Liunian service, which uses it to confirm your plan. Apple also notifies us of refunds and cancellations so that your plan stays correct.
Children
Liunian is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them. If you believe a child has used an AI feature, contact us and we will delete what we hold.
Your choices and rights
- You can use Liunian without any AI feature. Nothing leaves your device except through Apple's iCloud sync.
- You can turn off iCloud sync for Liunian in the Settings app.
- Deleting a note deletes it from your device and from your iCloud.
- Because the Liunian service does not keep your content, there is usually nothing of yours for us to return or delete. You may still ask us what we hold about you, or ask us to delete it, at support@liunianai.com.
- Residents of California and other US states with privacy laws may have additional rights, such as the right to know, correct and delete personal information, and not to be discriminated against for using them. We honour these requests at the address above.
Security and transfers
All requests travel over encrypted connections (HTTPS). The Liunian service and its providers may process data in the United States and other countries.
Changes
If we change this policy, we will update the effective date above. If a change is significant, we will tell you in the app.
